Sometimes I forget how much my parents do for me.
Most of the time they go above and beyond. Like right now, they’re heading downtown to my favourite local record shop to help me pick up tickets to Warpaint and Sharon Van Etten while my brother is at hockey practice. All this because I can’t do it myself since I’m stuck in London. I love them. I really should tell them that more.

I could probably listen to Emily Haines all day...
She was my soundtrack to the summer of ‘09.

I think Starbucks hates me.
It keeps kicking me off the Internet. I think it might be because I’ve been here for 4 hrs and only bought one drink. Or it could be because I’ve been making fun of the weird ass portraits hanging on the walls. I’m going to go with the latter, because it’s more interesting like that. So let me tell you about these portraits, because they are cringe-inducing. They’re...

That awkward moment when you really need to use...
but can’t, because the only two washrooms in the house are being occupied by your housemates who both happen to be showering at the same time. Fun.

My mother--she knows all the "divas"
Me: I hope Lauryn Hill doesn't show up 3hrs late to the concert on Saturday and declare that she's "worth it" like she did in New York.
Mom: What!? Why should she do that?
Me: Because she's a diva.
Mom: Huh? I should know her, then; I know all the divas!
Me: ...
Mom: Gaga Lady is a diva!
Me: ...Lady Gaga
Dad: Is Katy Perry a diva?
Mom: No.
Well I guess that's settled, then.

And it's hard when you don't know what to say.
And it’s even harder when it doesn’t matter what you say, because it won’t change anything or bring that person back. In times like these—times without solutions, without concrete resolutions—listening takes priority; not even listening, but just being there can make a difference. Because there aren’t any words powerful enough to heal in times like these, but...

For my best friend.
This poem helped me when I needed it, and I figured you could use it tonight. Love you. Parable of Immortality By Henry Van Dyke I am standing upon the seashore.  A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze  and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength, and I stand and watch until at last she hangs like a speck of white cloud  just where the sun...

whenparentstext: DAD: WHATS A CONTESSA AND WHY IS SHE BAREFOOT Both very good questions.  Other important questions to consider:  How are Giada’s nails always perfect? Does she get a manicure before every taping? And why does she always feel the need to wear low cut tops?  But seriously, Everyday Italian is where it’s at. Go watch. I felt the need to show my appreciate for...

You know those people you see laughing to...
So I was leaving the washroom just as another girl was opening the door. We screamed. I spilled coffee. We laughed. It was fun. I tried failed to suppress my giggles on the way back to class.

University can be a bitch...
(Don’t get me wrong. I find myself counting down the days till graduation most of the time.) But sometimes (just sometimes) it can also be totally awesome—especially when you attend a lecture with a professor who knows what he’s talking about and is clearly passionate about what he’s teaching. You know, those courses that really make you think about something bigger than...
